Nature's State

Nature's State
An engaging blend of environmental theory 'alaska state' and literary studies, Nature's State looks behind the myth of Alaska as America's last frontier, a pristine 'alaska state' and wild place on the fringes of our geographical imagination. Susan Kollin traces how this seemingly marginal space in American culture has in fact functioned to alleviate larger social anxieties about nature, ethnicity, 'alaska state' and national identity. Kollin pays special attention to the ways in which concerns for the environment not only shaped understandings of Alaska, but also aided U.S. nation-building projects in the Far North from the late nineteenth century to the present era. Beginning in 1867, the year the United States purchased Alaska, a variety of literary 'alaska state' and cultural texts helped position the region as a crucial staging ground for territorial struggles between native peoples, Russians, Canadians, 'alaska state' and Americans. In showing how Alaska has functioned as a contested geography in the nation's spatial imagination, Kollin addresses writings by a wide range of figures, including early naturalists John Muir 'alaska state' and Robert Marshall, contemporary nature writers Margaret Murie, John McPhee, 'alaska state' and Barry Lopez, adventure writers Jack London 'alaska state' and Jon Krakauer, 'alaska state' and native authors Nora Dauenhauer, Robert Davis, 'alaska state' and Mary TallMountain. The Train of States

The Train of States
A train of 50 railroad cars approaches, each one ornately decorated to resemble an antique circus wagon dedicated to one state in the United States of America--with a Washington, DC caboose. Each one rolls up in the order that the state it represents was admitted to the union, 'alaska state' and they all have their state's flag, nickname, motto (translated into English), flower, bird, 'alaska state' and tree emblazoned on at least one part of the design, along with portraits of presidents 'alaska state' and other luminaries 'alaska state' and pictures of signature sites like Mount Rushmore. A line of trivia is also included (In Barrow, Alaska's northernmost point, the sun doesn't set for 84 days during the summer months [although it doesn't caution the reader to either stay away from there in the winter or bring a strong flashlight], or North Dakota has 63 National Wildlife Refuges, more than any other state). Peter Sis's full-color ink-and-watercolor wash illustrations give the project an impact, 'alaska state' and deliver a lot of facts about the states to the young reader in a very unusual way.
